(a) 589 – 243 (b) 124 + 369
SOLU TION : (a) 589 – 243
Here, 589 rounded to near est hundred is 600 and 243 rounded to near est hundred
is 200.
So, 600 – 200 = 400
(b) 124 + 369
Here, 124 esti mated to near est hundred is 100.
369 esti mated to near est hundred is 400.
So, 100 + 400 = 500
EXAM PLE 3. Esti mate the follow ing prod uct:
(a) 2396 × 29 (b) 753 × 87
SOLU TION : Here, it is not mentioned that to which place we have to round off a number so, we may
round to near est hundred for a three-digit number, near est ten to two-digit number and
near est thou sand to a four-digit number.
(a) 2396 × 29
Here, 2396 rounded to near est thou sand is 2000.
29 rounded to near est ten is 30
Þ 2000 30´ = 60 000,
(b) 753 × 87
Here, 753 rounded to near est hundred is 800.
87 rounded to near est ten is 90
Þ 800 90´ = 72 000,
EXAM PLE 4. Esti mate the follow ing quotient:
(a) 58 ÷ 5 (b) 4956 ÷ 27
SOLU TION : (a) 58 ÷ 5
58 rounded to near est ten is 60.
So, 60 ÷ 5 = 12
(b) 4956 ÷ 27
4956 rounded to near est thou sand is 5000.
27 rounded to near est ten is 30.
So, 5000 ÷ 30 = 166
