P. 12
(b) 86 is the smallest as it contains the least number of digits.
7253 is the greatest as it contains maximum number of digits amongst all.
(c) 963 is the smallest as it contains minimum number of digits amongst all.
751534 is the greatest as it contains the maximum number of digits amongst all.
EXAMPLE 15. Compare the following:
(a) 45678 and 46523 (b) 52347 and 62526 (c) 23925 and 2495
SOLUTION : (a) Both 45678 and 46523 have same number of digits i e. ., 5. Compare them by looking at
the digits at Ten Thousands place which is 4 for both the numbers.
Next compare the second digit from the left. Here it is 5 in 45678 and 6 in 46523.
So, 46523 > 45678.
(b) Both the numbers are five-digit numbers.
So we compare them by comparing the digits at Ten Thousands place.
Since, 5 < 6
Thus, 52347 < 62526
(c) Here, 23925 has 5 digits and 2495 has 4 digits.
So, 23925 > 2495
EXAMPLE 16. Which one is greater 925346 or 925378?
SOLUTION : 925346 925378
9 = 9
2 = 2
5 = 5
3 = 3
4 < 7
So, 925346 < 925378
925378 is greater than 925346.
EXAMPLE 17. Arrange the following numbers in ascending order:
243795, 51395, 3795, 5343
SOLUTION : Number having more number of digits is greater 4-digit numbers are 3795 and 5343
5 and 6-digit number are 51395 and 243795 respectively.
Clearly, 3795 < 5343 < 51395 < 243795.
EXAMPLE 18. Arrange the following numbers in descending order:
993, 9413, 9113, 90005
SOLUTION : Numbers having more number of digits is greater.
9413 and 9113 have same number of digits.
Also 9413 > 9113
Thus, 90005 > 9413 > 9113 > 993.
