Upto 5 digits, the numbers are expressed in both the systems in the same way.
The main difference between the two system of numeration is in the placing of the commas.
In the Indian system, the first comma is put after the hundreds place (3 places from the right), then the
commas come after 2 more places (places from the right) i e. ., after ten thousand and again after 2 more
places 7 places from right (i e. ., after ten lakh).
In the International system, the commas are put after regular internals of 3 places i e. ., after 3 places from
the right, 6 places from the right and then after 9 places if needed.
EXAMPLE 1. Place the commas in each of the following numbers in both Indian and International system
of numeration:
(a) 86325 (b) 534631 (c) 9098672
SOLUTION : (a) 86,325 : Indian System (b) 5,34,631 : Indian System
86,325 : International System 534,631 : International System
(c) 90,98,672 : Indian System
9,098,672 : International System
EXAMPLE 2. Give the number name of the following in both the systems of numeration:
(a) 3856724 (b) 8007561
SOLUTION : (a) Indian System of 38,56,724 : Thirty-eight lakh fifty-six thousand and seven
Numeration hundred twenty-four.
International System 3,856,724 : Three million eight hundred fifty-six thousand and
of Numeration seven hundred twenty-four.
(b) Indian System of 80,07,561 : Eighty lakh seven thousand and five hundred
Numeration sixty-one.
International System 8,007,561 : Eight million seven thousand and five hundred
of Numeration sixty-one.
EXAMPLE 3. How many four digit numbers are there in all?
SOLUTION : The largest four digit number is 9999.
The largest three digit number is 999.
Total number of four digit numbers
= Largest four digit number - Largest three digit number
= 9999 999
-
= 9000.
EXAMPLE 4. Find the difference of the place value and face value of the digit 7 in 9745623.
SOLUTION : 7 is in lakh’s place. Therefore, the place value of 7 is 700000.
Face value of 7 is 7.
\ The required difference = 700000 7

= 699993.
