Exercise 2.3

Study each of the following patterns. Write the next two steps for each:

                    a. 37 3´ = 111 b. 1 + 2 = 3
                        37 6´ = 222 1 + 2 + 3 = 6
                        37 9´ = 333 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 = 10

                        37 12´ = 444 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 = 15
                              M M
                              M M
                    c. 46 ´ 9 = 460 – 46 d. 9 ´ 9 + 7 = 88
                        46 ´ 99 = 4600 – 46 9 ´ 98 + 6 = 888

                        46 ´ 999 = 46000 – 46 9 ´ 987 + 5 = 8888
                        46 ´ 9999 = 460000 – 46 9 ´ 9876 + 4 = 88888
                              M M
                              M M

                                                         At a Glance

l The whole numbers are the collection of natural numbers along with 0 (zero). Every whole number
has a successor. Every whole number except zero has a predecessor.

l All natural numbers are whole numbers but all whole numbers are not natural numbers. The largest
whole number or the largest natural number do not exist.

l All whole numbers can be represented on a number line. Number operations like addition,
subtraction as well as multiplication can be performed on a number line. Addition on number line
involves moving to the right of the number, whereas subtraction on number line corresponds to
moving to the left. Multiplication on number line corresponds to making jumps of equal distances, to
the right, starting from the zero.

l The closure, commutative and associative property hold true for addition and multiplication of
                   whole numbers only.
l Zero is additive identity of whole numbers whereas 1 is multiplicative identity of whole numbers.

l Division of a whole number by zero is not defined.

               Multiple Choice Questions

            Tick (3) the correct answer:
               1. The smallest natural number is:

                    (a) 0 (b) not defined (c) 1 (d) does not exist
