LAB ACTIVITY

Objective:

To demonstrate a magic square (4 4´ ) by ‘Cup Method’.
Materials Required:
Number strips, sketch pens and 4 4´ square.

Procedure:

1. Take any set of 16 consec utive natural numbers.
Let us take 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 5 12
17, 18, 19, 20.

2. In the given (4 4´ ) square, the first 8 cells are filled
with the numbers 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 as shown 7 10
in adjoining fig. 8 9
It looks like an open cup.
3. The remain ing 8 cells are filled by the numbers 13, 5 12 16 17
14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20 as shown below :

4. Keep Row 1 and Row 4 as they are. Change the
numbers in the cells in Row 2 and Row 3 as shown 5 12 16 17

5. Now this number square has ‘magic properties’.
